Event Summary

A major winter storm produced a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across large portions of the U.S., with the most severe impacts concentrated in parts of the South and Mid-South, then extending into the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.


  • Power outages: Roughly 46K customers are still without power  (down from over 1M at peek).

  • Fatalities: Reports indicate at least 13 weather-related deaths nationwide (toll may change as incidents are confirmed).

  • Primary hazards: Ice-driven tree/powerline damage, dangerous travel, and life-threatening cold exposure.

There are 14 local and national partners responding to 27 locations providing 8 unique services to those impacted by the storms, including Food Distribution, Debris Management, Chainsaw crews, Mobile Showers and Resource Providers.


How to help / what communities may need

  • Warming support: shelter staffing, transportation for vulnerable populations, blankets/heaters (as locally requested)

  • Food & water: especially for areas with multi-day outages

  • Cleanup support: chainsaw teams, debris removal, damage assessments (after conditions are safe)
