Western Alaska Flooding October 2025

Active Response

Status:

October 11, 2025

Disaster Reported:

Alaska (AK)

Affected area(s):

Event Summary

A powerful storm — the remnants of Typhoon Halong — struck Alaska’s western coast over the weekend, bringing hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding to dozens of remote communities across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

Entire homes were torn from their foundations and swept away by floodwaters. Families were rescued from rooftops and even from houses that were floating. Officials estimate that more than 1,400 people have been displaced, with over 50 rescues carried out and at least one fatality and two people still missing.

In the hardest-hit villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, infrastructure has been destroyed — roads washed out, runways cracked, and utilities crippled. For these isolated Alaska Native communities, recovery will be long and difficult as winter approaches and supply routes remain fragile.
