California Fires - January 2025 🔥

The massive Palisades Fire broke out in Los Angeles on January 7th, 2025, prompting mandatory evacuations affecting almost 200,000 people and highway closures. Throughout the week, many more fires broke out, including the Eaton Fire in the foothills of Pasadena on the other side of Los Angeles County. (FOX News Story)

Situation Status
29 fatalities reported and reports of 31 missing individuals (via CBS News).
15,700+ structures damaged or destroyed (via Fox News) and 53K people have registered for FEMA assistance (via Fox News).
ArcGIS Maps of damaged/destroyed homes are available for both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire.
6 million people where under critical fire threat on the 15th.
The fires have burned more than 40,588 acres — an area bigger than San Francisco or 2 1/2 times the size of Manhattan.
Economic losses are now estimated between $250-$275 billion, with the Palisades Fire being expected to be most destructive in L.A. history and has surpassed Hurricane Helene's estimated damages.
The fires are being described as California's "Hurricane Katrina".
More than 400,000 energy customers were without power at the peak.
The Red Cross and local organizations have been running evacuation centers for the last month it’s been reported that ~377 people are still at the various shelters as of 2/3/25 (via ca.gov shelter stats).
Santa Ana winds with gusts up to 100 mph, were contributing to rapid fire spread. The Santa Ana windstorm was forecasted to be the worst since 2011.
Health concerns has been a topic of discussion with some homes being over 100 years old and will contain asbestos and lead base paint.
Pasadena teachers union estimates 10% of their teachers lost homes in the fire with another 10% displaced. (via CBS News)
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency.
As people return home, many families will need to clean their home from the smell of smoke, using (via LA Times).
Crisis counselors and mental health professionals will be a large need for the long-term effects of metal health, especially in children. (via CBS News)
